Indira Gandhi Biography: Indira Gandhi, born on November 19, 1917, was the first woman Prime Minister of India and a prominent political leader. She was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first (PM)Prime Minister of India, and Kamala Nehru. Indira Gandhi served as the Prime Minister of India for a total of four terms.

Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi was born in Allahabad, British India (now in Uttar Pradesh, India). Growing up in a politically active family, she was exposed to the freedom struggle from a young age.

Political Career
Indira Gandhi’s political career started when she became a member of the Indian National Congress Party. She served as the President of the party in 1959. After the death of Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1966, she was chosen as the leader of the Congress Party and became the Prime Minister of India.

During her first term, she implemented various social and economic reforms, including nationalization of banks and abolition of princely privileges. Her leadership faced challenges, including the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, which led to the creation of Bangladesh as a separate nation.

Rajiv Gandhi was educated in India and the United Kingdom, where he studied engineering and later worked as a professional pilot for Indian Airlines. He entered politics after the tragic death of his younger brother, Sanjay Gandhi, in 1980.

Tragically, Rajiv Gandhi’s life was cut short when he was assassinated on May 21, 1991, during an election campaign in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, by a suicide bomber associated with the Sri Lankan militant organization (LTTE) Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
