Early Life

Sonia Gandhi was born in Lusiana, a small village near Vicenza in Italy. She met Rajiv Gandhi, the son of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, while studying in Cambridge, England. They were married in 1968.

Entry into Indian Politics

Sonia Gandhi initially stayed away from politics but was thrust into the limelight after the assassination of her husband Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. She was reluctant to enter politics, but in 1997, under pressure from the Congress party members, she formally joined the Indian National Congress.

Sonia Gandhi

Political Influence

During her tenure as the leader of the UPA, Sonia Gandhi played a significant role in shaping India’s policies. She was instrumental in the implementation of various social welfare programs, including the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and the Right to Information Act. Under her leadership, the UPA government was re-elected in 2009.

Leadership of the Congress Party

Under Sonia Gandhi’s leadership, the Congress party achieved significant success in the 2004 general elections in India. The party formed a coalition government with Sonia Gandhi as the leader. However, she declined the position of Prime Minister, citing concerns about her Italian origin becoming a contentious issue in Indian politics. Instead, Manmohan Singh became the Prime Minister, and Sonia Gandhi served as the leader of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), the ruling coalition in India.

Sonia Gandhi Congress

Sonia Gandhi Biography

Later Years

Sonia Gandhi continued to be an influential figure in Indian politics, guiding the Congress party through various state elections. She stepped down as the party president in 2017 but was re-elected to the position in 2019.

Sonia Gandhi’s political career has been marked by both support and criticism. Supporters view her as a strong leader who worked for the welfare of the common people, while critics have raised concerns about her foreign origins and questioned her role in Indian politics.
