History Of Taj Mahal

History Of Taj Mahal: The Taj Mahal is one of the most iconic and celebrated architectural wonders in the world, located in Agra, India. It was charged by Mughal Head Shah Jahan in memory of his cherished spouse, Mumtaz Mahal.

Construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1632 and took approximately 20 years to complete, employing thousands of artisans, craftsmen, and laborers. The main building materials were brought in from all over India and Asia, including white marble from Rajasthan, jasper from Punjab, jade and crystal from China, sapphire from Sri Lanka, and turquoise from Tibet.

Taj Mahal

In 1631, Mumtaz Mahal died while giving birth to her fourteenth child. Shah Jahan was devastated by her death and vowed to create a monument that would honor her memory. Legend has it that Shah Jahan intended to build a black Taj Mahal across the river as his own mausoleum, but there is no substantial historical evidence supporting this.

The Taj Mahal’s design is a harmonious blend of various architectural styles, primarily Persian, Islamic, and Indian influences. The complex is symmetrical, centered around the main mausoleum, which is flanked by a mosque and a guesthouse made of red sandstone.

The mausoleum’s central dome reaches a height of 240 feet (73 meters) and is surrounded by four smaller domes. The intricate marble inlays, calligraphy, and detailed carvings adorning the exterior and interior walls are breathtaking examples of exquisite craftsmanship.

Brief History Of Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal remained under the Mughal Empire until the mid-19th century. In later years, it faced some deterioration due to environmental factors and aging. However, extensive restoration efforts have been ongoing to preserve its beauty and structural integrity.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Taj Mahal stands as a symbol of love, architectural brilliance, and cultural heritage, attracting millions of visitors from around the world each year.
