Hard Disk
Hard Disk Drive is a non-volatile memory hardware device, the function of hard disk is to permanently store and retrieve computer data, that is, the data remains safe even after the computer power is off. Hard Disk is also called secondary storage device.
It is present inside a computer case and is connected to the computer motherboard using data cables (PATA, SATA, SCSI).
Types Of Hard Disk
- PATA (Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment)
- SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment)
- SCSI (Small Computer System Interface)
- SSD (Solid State Drives)
1. PATA (Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment)
- PATA Hard Disk is a medium speed hard disk, its data transfer rate is up to 133MB/s and It’s first time Uses in 1986 .
- The major drawback of PATA is that it does not support hot-swapping.
- PATA Hard Disk previously referred to as Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE)
2. SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment)
- SATA cables are quite thin and flexible, which is much better than PATA cables.
- The data transfer rate of a SATA Hard Disk is higher than that of a PATA Hard Disk.
- SATA Hard Disk is better than old hard disk drives in many ways.
- SATA Hard Disk speed can range from 150MB/s to 600MB/s.
3. SCSI (Small Computer System Interface)
- SCSI Hard Disk is very parallel to ‘IDE Hard Drive’.
- The new version of SCSI Hard Disk (16-bit ultra – 640) has a data transfer speed of up to 640 MBps and can connect to 16 devices with a cable length of 12 meters.
- SCSI Hard Disks use Small Computer System Interface to connect to computers.
4. SSD (Solid State Drives)
- SSD Hard Disk comes in today’s latest drives.
- Data access speed of SSD Hard Disk is very fast.
- SSD Hard Disk is much better and faster than all other Hard Disk devices & uses flash memory technology to store data.
