1. Indus River (सिन्धु नदी): It originates from a glacier close by Bokhar Chu in the Kailash mountain range in the Tibetan region, which is stationed at an altitude of 4,164 meters.

2. Jhelum (झेलम): It rises in the southeast of the Valley of Kashmir at an altitude of 4900 meters from a waterfall near Veering. Many rivers in Kashmir join it. Before entering Pakistan, the river passes through a narrow and deep gorge flowing through Srinagar and Wular Lake and joins the Chenab River near Jhang in Pakistan.

3. Ganga (गंगा): It is the most vital river in northern India. Its drainage area includes the most densely populated and fertile states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal.

4. Brahmaputra (ब्रह्मपुत्र): The Brahmaputra river is also called the daughter of Brahma. The Brahmaputra, one of the world’s largest rivers, has its origin in the Chemayungdug glacier near the Mansarovar Lake in the Kailash mountain range.

5. Yamuna (यमुना): The Yamuna is the westernmost and longest tributary river of the Ganges. Its origin is the Yamunotri glacier. Most of its water comes for irrigation purposes in the Western and Eastern Yamuna Canals and the Agra Canal.

6. Godavari (गोदावरी): It is also known as Dakshin Ganga. It originates from the Nashik district in Maharashtra and drains into the Bay of Bengal.

7. Chambal (चम्बल): This river originates from Janapav hill near Mhow in Madhya Desh, which is 616 meters high above sea level.

8. Sutlej (सतलज): The origin of the Sutlej River is the Rakshasa Tal near the Mansarovar Lake, located in the south of Mount Kailash in Tibet. After crossing the mountainous region, it enters the plains close to Rupnagar in Punjab.

It collects the combined waters of the Ravi, Jhelum, and Chenab rivers and falls into the Indus river at a place called Mithankot in Pakistan.

9. Gandak (गंडक): This river is formed by the meeting of two streams Kaligandak and Trishulganga.

10. Mahanadi (महानदी): Mahanadi originates near Sihawa in the Raipur district of Chhattisgarh. Flowing from Orissa, it discharges its water into the Bay of Bengal.

11. Krishna (कृष्णा): It is the second major east-flowing peninsular river, which arises near Mahabaleshwar in Sahyadri.
