कम्प्यूटर की  पीढ़ियाँ
प्रथम पीढ़ी (1940-1956)

कम्प्यूटर की  प्रथम पीढ़ी की शुरूआत 1940 से मानी जाती है। इस जनरेशन Vacuum Tube Technology में का प्रयोग किया गया था। इसमें मशीन भाषा का प्रयोग किया गया था। इसमें मेमोरी की तौर पर चुम्बकीय टेप एवं पचकार्ड का प्रयोग किया जाता था। इस पीढ़ी के कुछ कम्प्यूटरों के नाम इस प्रकार है- एनियक (ENIAC), एडसैक (EDSAC), एडबैक (EDVAC), यूनीवैक – 2 (UNIVAC-2), आईबीएम -701, आईबीएम-650, मार्क-2, मार्क-3, बरोज – 2202 (ENIAC).

द्वितीय पीढ़ी (1956-1963)

द्वितीय पीढ़ी की शुरूआत 1956 से 1963 तक मानी जाती है। इस पीढ़ी में Transistor का प्रयोग किया गया है। जिसका विकास Willon Shockly ने 1947 में किया था। इसमें असेम्बली भाषा का प्रयोग किया गया था। इसमें मेमोरी के तौर पर चुम्बकीय टेप का प्रयोग किया जाने लगा था। इस पीढ़ी के कम्प्यूटरों में आईबीएम- 1401 प्रमुख हैं, जो बहुत ही लोकप्रिय एंव बढ़े पैमाने पर उत्पादित किया गया था। इस पीढ़ी के अन्य कम्प्यूटर थे – IBM-1602, IBM-7094, CDS-3600, RCA-501, यूनिवेक – 1107 आदि.

तीसरी पीढ़ी (1964-1971)

कम्प्यूटर की तीसरी पीढ़ी की शुरूआत 1964 से मानी जाती है। इस जनरेशन में आई सी का प्रयोग किया जाने लगा था। IC का पूरा नाम Intergrated Circuit है। IC का विकास 1958 में Jack Kibly ने किया था। इसमें IC Technology (SSI) का प्रयोग किया गया था। SSI पूरा नाम Small Scale Integration है। इसमें हाई लेविल भाषा का प्रयोग प्रोग्रामिंग के लिए किया जाता है। इसमें मेमोरी के तौर पर चुम्बकीय डिस्क का प्रयोग किया जाने लगा था। इस पीढ़ी के कम्प्यूटरों की मदद से मल्टीप्रोग्रामिंग (Multi Programme), एवं मल्टी प्रोससिंग (Multi Processing) सम्भव हो गया । इस पीढ़ी के मुख्य कम्प्यूटर थे IBM-360,IBM-370(Series), ICL-1900 एवं (Series), बरोज – 5700, 6700 तथा 7700 (Serious), (CDC-3000-6000) तथा (Series) यूनिबेक – 9000 श्रृंखला, हनीबेल – 6000 तथा 200 PDP-11/45 आदि।

चौथी पीढ़ी (1971-1989)

कम्प्यूटर की चौथी पीढ़ी की शुरूआत 1971 से 1989 तक मानी जाती है। इस जनरेशन IC की यह तकनीकी VLSI थी इसका पूरा नाम Very Large Scale Intergration है। इसमें हाई लेवल भाषा का प्रयोग प्रोग्रामिंग के लिए किया जाता है। इसमें केवल एक सिलिकॉन चिप पर कम्प्यूटर के सभी एकीकृत परिपथों को लगाया जाता है, जिस माइक्रोप्रोसेसर कहा जाता है। इस चिपों का प्रयोग करने वाले कम्प्यूटरों को माइक्रो कम्प्यूटर (Micro Computer) कहा जाता है।

पाँचवी पीढ़ी 

कम्प्यूटर की पाँचवी पीढ़ी की शुरूआत 1989 से मानी जाती है। इस जनरेशन में आईसी की आधुनिक तकनीकी का प्रयोग किया जाने लगया था। | IC की यह तकनीकी ULSI थी इसका पूरा नाम Ultra Large Scale Integration है। इसमें हाई लेवल भाषा का प्रयोग प्रोग्रामिंग के लिए किया जाता है। जो अधिक सरल है। इस भाषाओं में GUI Interface का प्रयोग किया जाता हे।
